tuning guitar from ear

January 8th, 2008 by hunkyjames

When I started playing guitar, along with almost everyone else, we all learnt songs in standard EADGBE tuning. Which is fine, while your stuill gettin to grips with the fretboard and different effects you can make etc etc. But later on, your gonna find yourself tuning to other tunings, a whole list can be found on this website’s lessons section. In this lesson ill hopefully help you tune differently!

Lets start. Everyone should be familier with a guitar, has 6 strings usually, compromises of around 22-24 etc frets and so on. If we take a look at the 6th string more closly:

E|--F--|--F#-|--G--|--G#-|--A--|--Bb-|--B--|--C-|--Cb-|--D--|--D#-|--E--|

This is the E string the first 12 frets (each letter represents 1 fret). As we can see from this, the 12th fret is an E, and to save time, the 12th fret of the 5th string is a A, the 12th fret of the 4th string is a D, and so on. We now know, that every note on the 12th fret is what the tuning will be (in this case its standard - EADGBe).

We will now look at one of the most common other tunings, Drop-D which is DADGBe. If we compare this to standard tuning, it is only the 6th string that needs changing. If you look at the E string above with the notes, it says that the D note is fret 10, so we need to move the note from fret 10, to fret 12, get me? we can do this easily. look at the forth string. Its also a D, therefore, if we put our finger on the 12th fret, 6th string, and pluck it, we get an E note. Simply, turn the tuner clockwise, (keeping your finger on the 12th fret - 6th string). Now and again, pluck the 6th string with the 12th fret pressed, and pluck the 4th string open. When they sound similar without any resonating, you have managed to move the D note, down to places from 10th fret to 12th fret.

Moving on slightly, you may start to ask, what happens if you want to tune the 6th string to say D#? One fret down, but D# isnt anywhere on any of the strings on the 12th fret.

So what do we want?
-We want to have the following tuning: D#, A, D, G, B, e

How do we do it?
- start by mapping out all the notes on all strings (a copy can be found at the end of this lesson), then, look at the string below it, the 5th string (A). On thet 4th fret, there is a D#. We now know where it is, so pluck the 5th string on the 4th fret. This will give the note of D#, now, we want to take that sound, and place it on the 6th string. We already know, that the D# on the 6th string is fret 11, therefore we already know when we are ready to tune, you need to turn the tuner clockwise. (This will work best with an amp, but dont worry if you dont have one. ) Pluck the 5th string 4th fret, then pluck the 12th fret 6th string, turn the tuner on the 6th string clockwise, until the two sounds match up, without any resonating (resonating; matching the two sounds in harmony so there is no ‘wobbling’ of sounds). You have now managed to tune to D#, A, D, G, B, e

The real challenge: DADadd tuning (also called Open D5 (I think)). This is a popular tuning used by Mark Tremonti (formally of creed - now alter bridge). We already no by looking at this, we do not need to change the 5th and 4th strings, as they are already tuned to this. The 6th string is a D, which is drop D, we already learnt how to tune to this, but ill go over it quickly again; pluck the 12th fret of the 6th string and then pluck the 4th string open. Turn the tuner of the 6th string clockwise until when you pluck the 12th fret of the 6th string and the 4th string open there is no resonating. We now have the first three notes, DAD. now for the next 3, add.

Look at the 3rd string notes. The note A is fret 14. Because it is past the 12th fret (closer towards the body of the guitar), you know now you need to turn the tuner anti-clockwise 2 frets. Now, look at the 2nd string at the closest A to the 12th fret. On the second string, the A note closest to the 12th fret is on fret 10. Pluck this note, then pluck the 12th fret of the 3rd string. Turn the 3rd strings tuner anit-clockwise, until the 10th fret of string 2 and the 12th fret of string 3 sound the same without any resonating.

Once you have done that, you now have the tuning DADaBe. Just the last two strings to do! We now need to change the B on the 2nd fret to a D. Again, look at the chart of notes. On the 2nd string, the closest D to fret 12, is on fret 15, so we know again, we need to turn the tuner anti-clockwise. Now, find the closest D to the 12th fret on the 1st string. Its located at fret 10. Again, pluck the 12th fret on the 2nd string, with the 10th fret on the 1st string. Turn the 2nd strings tuner anti-clockwise, until both the 10th fret 1st string and 12th fret 2nd string sound the same without any resonating.

This leaves us with 1 string left to tune, but all the other strings have shifted notes remember, dont get caught out. We now have DADade. We want to change the e on the 1st string to a D. The closest D is on the 12th fret 2nd string. For the last time, we know that the D on the 1st string is before the 12th fret, so we turn the tuner clockwise. Pluck the 2nd string OPEN (This is because whatever note is on the 12th string, is also the note sounded when that string is played open. ) and play the 12th fret of the 1st string. Turn the tuner of the 1st string clockwise until the 2nd string open and the 1st string 12th fret (or played open) sound the same without any resonating.

You have now finished tuning to DADadd. To tune back to standard, its simple, use strings 4 and 5, and tune around those. So if you want to tune string 6 from a D to an E, put your finger on the 5th fret of the 6th string, and pluck that (while turning the tuner anti-clockwise) untill it sounds the same (without any resonating) as the 5th string played open. If you do not know how to tune by ear to standard search this site’s lessons for either ‘tuning by ear’ or ‘harmonic tuning’ (the last one works best if you have an amp).

I have based how to tune around the 12th fret as that is how I learnt to tune. You can also tune around playing strings open, but thats harder and complicated. Below you will find a complete list of notes on the strings (like the diagram above). You can use this to find out were notes are on a string. Take note how everything can revolve around the 12th fret - any string)

When you get to the 12th fret, and want to know what note is past that, just start from fret 1 again, its an endless cycle. I have wrote the string names in standard to make it easier to understand

E|--F--|--F#-|--G--|--G#-|--A--|--Bb-|--B--|--C--|--Cb-|--D--|--D#-|--E--|
B|--C--|--Cb-|--D--|--D#-|--E--|--F--|--F#-|--G--|--G#-|--A--|--Bb-|--B--|
G|--G#-|--A--|--Bb-|--B--|--C--|--Cb-|--D--|--D#-|--E--|--F--|--F#-|--G--|
D|--D#-|--E--|--F--|--F#-|--G--|--G#-|--A--|--Bb-|--B--|--C--|--Cb-|--D--|
A|--Bb-|--B--|--C--|--Cb-|--D--|--D#-|--E--|--F--|--F#-|--G--|--G#-|--A--|
E|--F--|--F#-|--G--|--G#-|--A--|--Bb-|--B--|--C--|--Cb-|--D--|--D#-|--E--|

If you want to correct me on any of this, please feel free to email me, my email address is spatulator@hotmail.com. Also if you need any help at all with this, or you didn’t understand aspects of it, feel free to email me as well, ill always help as best as I can and reply as soon as I can.

Kwento sa ARkong bato

fourth grade boy

blessed boy

Somewhere in Milaor, Camarines Sur, there lived a fourth grader boy, halos kaidad lang ng anak kong si Lee ngayon,  who would follow this route to school everyday: He has to cross the rugged plains and cross the dangerous highway where vehicles are recklessly
driving to and from.

Once past this highway, the boy would take a short cut, passing by the Church every morning just to say Hi to God, and faithfully say his, "Magandang umaga po" in Bicol dialect. He was faithfully being watched by a Priest who was happy to find innocence so uplifting in the morning,

"Kamusta, Andoy? Papasok ka na?"

"Opo padre … "

he would flash his innocent grin, the priest would be touched. He was so concerned that one day he talked to Andoy.

"From school…", he advised "Do not cross the highway, you can pass
through the Church and I can accompany you to the other side of the
road …that way I can see that you are home safe…."

"Thank you father …"
"Why don’t you go home … do you stay in this church right after
school?"

"I just want to say "Hi" to my friend, God,"

and the priest would leave the boy to spend time beside the altar,
talking to himself, but the priest was hiding behind the altar to
listen to what this boy has to say to his heavenly FATHER.

"You know my math exam was pretty bad today, but I did not cheat
although my seatmate is bullying me for notes… I ate one cracker and drank my water, Itay had a bad season and all I can eat is this cracker.
Thank you for this! I saw a poor kitten who was hungry and I know how he feels so I gave my last cracker to him … funny but I am not that hungry. Look, this is my last pair of slippers …I may have to walk barefoot next week, you see this is about to be broken… but it is okay ….at least I am still going to school…. Some say we will have a hard season this month, some of my classmates have already stopped going to school … please help them get to school again, please God? …Oh, you know, Inay hit me again, it is painful, but I know this pain will pass away, at least I still have a mother…. God, you want to see my bruises? I know you can heal them…. Here… here and …. oh …blood … I guess you knew about this one huh? Please don’t be mad at Inay, she is just tired and she worries for the food in our table and my schooling that is why she hits us ….Oh, I think I am in love … there’s this pretty girl in my class, her name is Anita … do you think she will like me? Anyway, at least I know you will always like me, I don’t have to be anybody just to please you, you are my very best friend! Hey your birthday is two days from now!!! Aren’t you excited? I am! Wait till you see, I have a gift for you …. but it is
a surprise! I hope you will like it! Oooops, I have to go …" then he stood up and calls out, "Padre, padre, I am finished talking to my friend … you can accompany me to the other side of the road now"

This routine happens everyday. Andoy never fails.
Father Agaton shares
this every Sunday to the people in his church because he has not seen
a very pure faith and trust in God, a very positive look at negative
situations.

One Christmas day, Father Agaton was sick so he could not make it in
the Church, he was sent to the hospital. The Church was left to 4
manangs who would chant the rosary in 1000 miles per hour, would not
smile and would always find fault in what you do, they were also very
well versed in cursing if you irritate them! They were kneeling,
saying their kilometric rosary when Andoy, coming from his Christmas
party, playfully dashed in.

"Hello God! I …"

"P—-!! (a curse) bata ka!! Alam mo nang may nagdadasal!! Alis!!"

Poor Andoy was so terrified, "Where’s Father Agaton? He is supposed to
help me cross the street …. and to be able to cross the street I will have to pass by the back door of this church …not only that, I have to greet Jesus. It is His birthday, I have a gift right here…."

Just as he was about to get the gift out of his shirt, the manang pulled his shirt and threw him out of the church.
"Susmaryosep!!! (does the sign of the cross fervently) Alis kang bata ka, kung hindi matatamaan ka!!!

So the boy had no choice but to cross the dangerous side of the road in front of the church. He crossed. A fast moving bus came in. There was a blind curve. The boy was protecting his gift inside his shirt, so he was not looking. There was so little time. Andoy died on the spot. A lot of people crowded the poor boy, the body of a lifeless
young boy …

Suddenly, out of nowhere a tall man in a pure white shirt and pants, a face so mild and gentle, but with eyes full of tears… He came and carried the boy in His arms. He was crying. Curious bystanders nudged the man in white, and asked,

"Excuse me sir, are you related to this child? Do you know this child?"

The man in white, His face mourning and in agony, looked up and
answered,

"He was my best friend …. " was all he said. He took the badly wrapped gift in the bloody chest of the lifeless boy, and placed it near His heart.

He stood up and carried the boy away and they both disappeared in sight. The crowd was curious …

On Christmas Eve, Father Agaton learned of the shocking news. He visited the house, and wanted to verify about the man in white. He consulted the parents of Andoy.

"How did you know that your son died?"
"A man in white brought him here." sobbed the mother.
"What did he say?"
The father answered, "He did not say anything. He was mourning. We do not know him and yet he was very lonely about our son’s death, as if he knew our son very well. But there was something peaceful and unexplainable about him. He gave me my son, and then he smiled peacefully. He brushed my son’s hair away from his face and kissed him
on his forehead, then he whispered something …"

"What did he say?"

"He said to my boy…" the father began, "Thank you for the gift … I will see you soon … you will be with me…" and the father of the boy continued, "and you know for a while, it felt so wonderful … I cried, but I do not know why….all I know is I cried tears of joy … I could not explain it, Father, but when that man left, something peaceful came over me, I felt a deep sense of love inside … I could not explain the joy in my heart, I knew my boy is in heaven now but…tell me, Father, who is this man that my son talks to everyday in your church, you should know because you are always there … except at the time of his death …"

Father Agaton suddenly felt the tears welling in his eyes, with trembling knees, he murmurred, " … He was talking to no one ….. but… GOD…."

Natural Talent

October 9th, 2006 by hunkyjames

What do most people say when they witness a breathtaking performance by an artist? You would be likely to hear statements such as: "I wish I could do that, but I don’t have the talent" "Only the "chosen few" can create art at such a high level". Before long, a student will start to ask himself: "Do I have the talent that is required to improve as a musician?" After all everybody you ask tries to get you to believe that talent is one of the core requirements of becoming a great musician/artist, right?

In this article, I will attempt to convince you why I consider this belief to be false and unproductive.

First of all, what is talent? If you ask somebody to define the term, chances are they won’t be able to come up with a useful definition. You might hear things like: "Talent is something that you are born with, you either have it or you don’t"

Ponder this: when you think about ANY other career field or endeavor (becoming a scientist, doctor, brain surgeon, airplane pilot etc…) and then you ask yourself: what does it take to reach a high level of performance in any one of these fields? The answers would be something like: "Well, you have to go to school, get an education, then get some experience in the job field, gain more knowledge and eventually after years of hard work and study you will get to the level you desire." So essentially, you are acquiring a SET OF SPECIFIC SKILLS as well as knowledge and experience in your field of study.

Now if you ask most people: "What does it take to become a good musician" Chances are that the main response would be: "lots of talent and practice" Why is art (and music) considered to be basically the only field where "talent" seems to be one of the primary deciding factors? Why isn’t talent a "requirement" for becoming a doctor for instance? Think about this logically. Most people won’t even think about "talent" if they were to go into a science field for instance. They will primarily concerned with is acquiring the right education for what they want to do. They know that if they go through the hard work required over the course of many years they will succeed in reaching their goals.

Now I hear some people saying: "Well making artistic/creative music requires talent, because you can have all the knowledge in the world but still create mediocre music, right?" Wrong!! Creating meaningful music that moves people is a matter of knowing what you want to express and acquiring the right tools. It also takes a deep LOVE for music and the DEEP, BURNING DESIRE to express oneself. This is the one ingredient that is frequently missing even when all the knowledge in the world is present. Think about it in plain terms: becoming a good musician (or a good anything) requires a specific set of skills. To a musician and guitarist in particular (some of) these skills include: well developed technique, good understanding of music theory AND knowing how to apply it, ear training, improvisational skills, and compositional ability. Each of these are specific skills that need to be ACQUIRED, and since they are LEARNED, they can be also be taught. Now the problem that is very often present is that of LACK OF COMPETENT INSTRUCTION. This is the single biggest reason why a lot of musicians (particularly guitarists) fail to get good. Guitar technique is very often not taught with the necessary depth it requires, partly because the guitar is a relatively new instrument which is still evolving. Piano and violin pedagogy for example is way ahead of guitar, which is part of the reason why there are a lot more great pianists and violinists than guitarists. In addition, a lot of musicians learn lots of theory but are never shown how to apply it to enhance their creativity. As a result you will hear some people tell you not to bother with learning music theory because it is not useful and will just inhibit your creativity. So the very often the problem is not lack of talent on the student’s part, it is the lack of ability to teach effectively on the teacher’s part! There are very few great music teachers who can produce results effectively with students(unless one is studying music at a university or conservatory) especially when compared to teachers in other fields such as science and medicine to name a few.

Now I would like to make one thing plain. I’m not trying to state that there is no such thing as natural talent. It does exist and it does help. Jamie Andreas (at guitarprinciples.com) defines this commonly misunderstood term as the "body’s innate predisposition to do the right things instinctively" These "things" that the naturally gifted person does intuitively can be analyzed, defined and then taught by a competent teacher. However, as mentioned above, most guitar teachers aren’t competent.

Of course some people might argue that you need the so called talent to CREATE expressive music. But this is simply not true. There is one thing however that when it comes to creating expressive music that you either have or do not have. And that is DESIRE. You have to feel the desperate need to hear the music, the need that will be satisfied by bringing your unique music forth. This IS the true MUSICAL talent that is either present or absent. EVERYTHING else are sets of tools that can be acquired with time, practice, perseverance and by studying with a great teacher. After all you wouldn’t try to learn how to fly a plane from someone who you weren’t sure you could trust as an instructor, would you? So it is essential that you select your teachers carefully. My friend and mentor, Tom Hess, has written a great article on the subject entitled "Choosing a Teacher" which I highly recommend to check out.

As one final point I would like to show you a quote from one of the greatest composers in the history of music.

"People make a mistake who think that my art has come easily to me. Nobody has devoted so much time and thought to composition as I. There is not a famous master whose music I have not studied over and over." - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

As you may know, Mozart was a child prodigy who is believed to be one of the most "talented" musicians that ever lived. There are rumors that he never wrote any of his music down, that he just heard it naturally in his head. This may or may not be true, but the fact is that he still worked extremely hard to get to the level of compositional prowess that he attained. Had he decided to not push himself to seek knowledge in order to develop his skills, he would never have created any of the awesome music that he is now so famous for.

Hopefully you now see that the best question to ask yourself is not "Do I have talent?" but rather "Do I have the DESIRE to seek out the best possible instruction in music that will enable me to reach my goals? And do I have the love in my heart for music and the passion required to sustain my efforts in becoming a great musician?"

Music is heal to problems:):-/

From the lyrics of abba songs " so i say thank for the music the song we’re singin, who can live without it" …… saludo ako dun (all hail to abba’s song:-P hehe).. music is life,why:-?, if feel depressed, cguro ang iba punta sa bar para palipas oras tapos makinig ng mga heartful songs, tapos para sa akin if i am doing my task like mopping the floor, ang sarap atang makinig ng hardrock songs, nakaiindak ng lahat ng kalamnan ng katawan lalo na ang ulo, hehe, if kasama mo naman gf mo sa tabi, sarap cguro pakinggan ng mga songs ng mga mymp(lalong maging sweet kaung dalawa, lolz) nakakagaan talaga ng feeling lalo kapag fave song mo yung pinapatugtog lalo na kung meaningful sau like for ex. nung graduation namin, farewell kanta namin nun, akalain mo ba namang ang may batong puso napaluha ng kantang yun, we can say also music is powerful, some bands or artist use music to fight the government for being scum or not fair  to the people, some bands like rage against the machine, bob marley and etc… because they cannot fight the powerful government they make music as their fighting weapon, and guess what many people agreed to their music… music help other country to rise in times of being down.. Africa is one, many artist gathered for a song for a cause to help aids victim of africa… Music is also a way to gain friends and to have more girlfriends, lolz, tulad ko, nung naghiwalay kami gf ko, masyadong depressed ako sa panahonh yun, ang tuition ko binili ko ng guitar para lamang may pagka-abalahan at makalimutan ang "past".. at yun epektibo ako pa ang laging highlights pag nagkakasiyahan ang tropa, Para na yatang epoxy ang musika na nakadikit sa aking kaluluwa na pag nawala, wala ng saysay ang buhay natin, dba, hope u agree:-P…
